Government MP Ramona Attard has issued a public warning after her WhatsApp account was compromised and allegedly used by scammers to ask her contacts for money.
In a Facebook post, Attard revealed that an unknown individual had gained unauthorised access to her account and was sending messages to people in her contact list requesting payments through Revolut.
“Someone illegally accessed my WhatsApp and is sending messages to my contacts asking them to send money for rent through Revolut,” she said. “I do not even have a Revolut account. This is a scam and it is not me sending these messages.”
According to Attard, the scammer has been asking contacts to send €1,150 and providing a link to a Revolut account belonging to a third party.
The MP said she has already reported the incident to the police and urged anyone who receives a message from her requesting money not to respond.
Adding to the concern, Attard explained that the individuals behind the hack are archiving her WhatsApp messages, meaning she currently has no way of seeing who is being contacted through her account.
The incident serves as another reminder for people to be extremely cautious when clicking on links received through messaging apps and social media.
Just yesterday ago, the Malta Police Force warned the public about a scam involving messages asking recipients to “vote” for someone to help them secure a scholarship.
The messages typically contain suspicious links that can be used to steal personal information, gain access to accounts or spread the scam further by compromising additional victims.
Police urged members of the public not to click on links, even if the message appears to come from someone they know, and advised people to verify requests through another means of communication before taking any action.
“Always think before you click,” the police warned.
With scams becoming increasingly sophisticated and trusted accounts now being hijacked to target friends and family, it’s a reminder that even a message from a familiar contact isn’t always what it seems.
If you receive a request for money, or a suspicious link, take a moment to double-check before responding.
