Labour MP Ramona Attard has warned followers about a scam involving fraudulent WhatsApp messages sent in her name requesting money.
Taking to social media, Attard explained that scammers gained access to her WhatsApp account through what she described as a social engineering scam.
According to Attard, the incident happened after she logged in to support a girl participating in a competition, unknowingly giving fraudsters access to her account.
She urged anyone who receives messages requesting money to exercise caution and avoid sending funds without first confirming the request through direct contact.
Attard noted that Maltese people are often generous and willing to support charitable causes, but warned that scammers frequently exploit this goodwill.
“Don’t send money if you don’t have clear contact with the person requesting it,” she stressed.
The MP used the incident to raise awareness about online scams and the importance of verifying requests for donations or financial assistance before making any payments.
