U.S. President Donald Trump and Iran’s President signed a deal on Wednesday (June 17, 2026) meant to end the West Asia war, with Tehran agreeing to dilute its enriched uranium in return for large-scale economic relief. Mr. Trump put his signature to the memorandum of understanding during dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles following a G7 summit, a U.S. official told AFP.

Oil prices fell in early trading on Thursday (June 18) after the U.S. and Iran signed an interim agreement that would end the Iran war. Brent crude futures were down 89 cents, or 1.12%, at $78.66 a barrel as of 0005 GMT, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate fell 98 cents, or 1.28%, to $75.81 a barrel. The benchmarks resumed their decline, reversing gains made on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump said he could resume his bombing campaign if Iran’s leaders “don’t behave”.

Oil slips again as U.S., Iran sign peace deal
Oil prices fell in early trading on Thursday (June 18) after the U.S. and Iran signed an interim agreement that would end the Iran war, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and waive U.S. sanctions on Tehran’s oil, resolving the largest energy supply disruption in history.
Brent crude futures were down 89 cents, or 1.12%, at $78.66 a barrel as of 0005 GMT, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate fell 98 cents, or 1.28%, to $75.81 a barrel.
The benchmarks resumed their decline, reversing gains made on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump said he could resume his bombing campaign if Iran’s leaders “don’t behave”.

Though the announcement of the U.S.–Iran peace agreement has been welcomed as good news, Indian shipowners were cautious, just like international shipping companies. “It’s too early to say anything. We have to wait for the agreement to be signed, and then clarity has to emerge on the terms and conditions,” says Anil Develi, CEO of Indian National Shipowners Association, adding uncertainty continues.
Mr. Devli said if things go well, it would take another 30 to 60 days for full normalcy. “We hope and expect the government to facilitate getting the vessels back,” he said.

Text of U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding released by U.S.
“The United States of America and Islamic Republic of Iran have jointly agreed in good faith on (a date yet to be determined, the official said), on the following:
“Paragraph 1 - The United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran and their allies in the current war, by signing this MOU, declare an immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and undertake from now on not to initiate any war or any military operation against each other and to refrain from the threat or use of force against each other, and ensuring the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Lebanon. The final deal will confirm the permanent termination of the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon, and other provisions of this paragraph.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, quoted by the state news agency IRNA, said the document “was finalized with the signatures of the Presidents.”
