
MANILA – Four major coal power plants in the Visayas remain on forced outages, resulting in yet another yellow alert status for the grid from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday.
According to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), the generating unit 1 of KEPCO-SPC Power Corporation remains unavailable to date, along with the units 1 and 2 of the Therma Visayas Inc. and the unit 3 of of the Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC).

The Department of Energy said the PEDC unit 3 is scheduled to resume operations on Wednesday.
However, since it remains on forced outage, the grid’s available capacity of around 2,570 megawatts (MW) is insufficient to meet contingency requirement as peak demand is expected to reach 2,452MW.

The NGCP said a total of 11 power plants are on forced outage this June alone, eight since May 2026, one since March, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021.
There are also 10 power plants that are operating on derated capacities, bringing the total unavailable capacity to the grid to around 964.4MW. (PNA)
