NGCP: Visayas grid still under yellow alert on Saturday

MANILA, Philippines — The Visayas power grid is still placed under “yellow alert” status on Saturday because of high demand forecast and unavailability of Visayas’ large coal plants, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.

The alert status will be effective from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., according to the NGCP’s Saturday advisory, which was issued at 9 a.m.

It noted that the “yellow alert” is raised “when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.”

NGCP explained that while the available capacity is at 2,483 megawatts (MW), the peak demand stands at 2,382 MW. It also said that the large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2, PEDC 3, and KSPC 1 have been unavailable.

It also noted that there are a total of 1,052 MW unavailable to the grid as there are 16 plants on forced outage on June this year; eight plants on forced outage since May 2026; one plant since March 2026; three plants since 2025; two plants since 2024; two plants since 2023; and one plant since 2021.
