Kathmandu, June 18
Home Minister Sudhan Gurung has stated that this year’s monsoon disaster response will prioritise “public safety over ministerial inspections.” To that end, he said measures being taken include deploying helicopters as well as identifying landslide-prone areas through a mobile app.
Minister Gurung made these remarks while speaking to journalists as he was leaving the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).
He said, “Our line ministry has developed an app. We can see exactly where the dozers are located. If a response is needed in a given area, we’ve developed an app that can immediately facilitate road clearance.”
Recalling his own past work in disaster rescue and relief operations, he argued that the shortcomings seen under previous governments would not be repeated this time.
He said every effort is being made to ensure that citizens do not have to wait on roads for extended periods, unlike in past disasters.
