Writer and architect Will Köhlen will present his new book, The Architecture of Manuel Gomes da Costa in Faro & More, at Gallery Gama Rama in Faro today (Thursday, June 18), at 6pm.
The richly illustrated guide examines the life and work of architect Manuel Gomes da Costa (1921–2016), one of the key figures behind the development of modernist architecture in the Algarve.
Designed as an accessible travel guide, the publication introduces readers to some of Gomes da Costa’s most significant projects in Faro, many of which continue to shape the city’s urban landscape today.
Beyond documenting individual buildings, the book explores the architect’s distinctive style and places his work within the broader rise of modernism in the Algarve during the second half of the 20th century. It highlights the efforts of Gomes da Costa and his contemporaries to establish a new architectural language for the region.
The publication also looks to the future, featuring the work of contemporary architect Filipe Paixão, of Corpo Atelier, whose projects reflect Faro’s continuing architectural evolution.
During the presentation, Köhlen will discuss the inspiration behind the book, his research process and his longstanding interest in the architectural heritage of Faro and the Algarve.
The event will also feature a presentation by organiser Christophe Oliveira, who will unveil the programme for the upcoming Modernist Weekend, an initiative dedicated to architecture, heritage and modernist culture in Faro.
The evening will conclude with a book signing session for The Architecture of Manuel Gomes da Costa in Faro & More, alongside other titles by Köhlen.
The presentation takes place at Gallery Gama Rama, located at Rua do Prior 46 in Faro, and is open to anyone with an interest in architecture, culture, urban history and the Algarve.
