Serious crash closes part of SH1 north of Wellington

Traffic on State Highway One north of Wellington has ground to a standstill after a serious crash.

Motorists have reported huge delays after the southbound lane was closed between the Tawa off-ramp and Glenside on-ramp.

Emergency services attended the scene where two vehicles crashed about 4.40pm.

Police say one person has serious injuries.

The serious crash unit has been notified.

Police advise motorists to avoid the area and expect delays.
