The Algarve International Circuit (AIA) has been awarded the highest environmental certification available from the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), placing it among a select group of motorsport venues recognised for their sustainability efforts.
The Portimão racetrack received the FIA’s three-star environmental accreditation on May 19, the highest level awarded under the governing body’s environmental and sustainability programme.
The distinction recognises the environmental policies and sustainable management practices implemented across the Algarve motorsport complex, says the racetrack’s management.
According to FIA’s website, the FIA Environmental Accreditation Programme helps motorsport organisations measure and improve their environmental performance through a structured Environmental Management System. Based on international standards including ISO 14001, ISO 20121 and EMAS, the programme awards certifications on a three-tier scale, ranging from one-star “Basic Practice” to three-star “Best Practice”.
The three-star rating recognises organisations that demonstrate best practice and a commitment to continual improvement through the implementation of an environmental management system.
By securing the maximum three-star rating, the Algarve International Circuit joins a limited number of circuits worldwide to achieve the top level of certification.
The circuit said the award validates the environmental measures adopted in recent years and reflects an ongoing commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
Management pledged to continue investing in sustainable practices as part of a long-term strategy to improve the environmental performance of the complex, which hosts activities on more than 350 days of the year and attracts millions of visitors to the Algarve.
The recognition comes at a significant time for the venue, which is due to host MotoGP later this year and will welcome Formula 1 back in 2027 and 2028 under agreements already confirmed by organisers.
Since opening in 2008, the Algarve International Circuit has become one of Portugal’s leading motorsport venues, hosting Formula 1, MotoGP, World Superbike and numerous international testing programmes.
