Malta’s solar energy sector continued its upward trajectory in 2025, with new figures showing record levels of electricity generation from photovoltaic (PV) panels across the islands.
According to newly published statistics, Malta and Gozo were home to 36,243 PV installations by the end of 2025, with the vast majority located in Malta.
Most installations remain domestic, accounting for over 93% of all PV systems currently in operation. Commercial and public-sector installations made up a much smaller share of the total number of systems.
However, commercial installations continue to dominate in terms of electricity-generating capacity, accounting for more than half of the total maximum power output generated by PV systems across the country.
The combined maximum output of all photovoltaic systems reached over 268,000 kWp in 2025, representing a 5.2% increase compared to the previous year.
Perhaps most notably, electricity generation from grid-connected solar panels increased by 7.5% during the year, reaching an estimated 351.5 GWh.
The figures underline Malta’s growing reliance on renewable energy sources at a time when countries across Europe are seeking to reduce emissions and improve energy security.
While solar power still represents only part of Malta’s overall energy mix, the continued growth in installations and generation suggests more households and businesses are investing in renewable energy than ever before.
As energy costs and sustainability remain key concerns, the island’s rooftops are increasingly becoming part of the solution.
