Final preparations are underway for the election of central members at the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP )’s first general convention being held in Chitwan. Candidates are currently busy with their election campaigns.
In the nomination registration process that continued late into the previous night, around 400 people filed their nominations. According to the RSP’s party constitution, 99 central members will be elected through voting, while 51 central members will be nominated by the party chairperson.
Since Rabi Lamichhane was the only candidate to register for the chairperson’s post, he has already been elected unopposed. The RSP constitution states that after the central members are chosen, elections for a 19-member executive committee will follow.
Central member candidates and their supporters are currently canvassing votes while carrying campaign materials. Paper campaign materials can be seen scattered around the election venue.
The RSP’s first general convention has been underway in Chitwan since June 21. Although the convention was initially scheduled to conclude by June 23, RSP leaders say it has been extended due to delays in finalising the delegate count caused by technical issues.
Around 4,000 delegates are attending the RSP general convention. They will cast their votes using electronic voting machines. Approximately 80 machines have been kept in readiness for voting. While the voting itself will be conducted electronically, campaigning is taking place entirely on paper.
