The Nigerian Academy of Engineering (NAEng) has called on the Federal Government to immediately implement the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) and upgrade the national electricity grid to a supply capacity of 25,000 megawatts (MW) as part of efforts to address the country’s persistent power challenges.
Speaking at a press conference to herald the Academy’s 2026 Apex Events in Lagos, the President of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, Prof. Rahamon Bello, said Nigeria’s power sector requires urgent intervention through financial reforms, infrastructure upgrades and increased investment in alternative energy sources.
According to Bello, the Academy recently reviewed the country’s electricity supply-demand imbalance and developed a policy paper aimed at addressing the sector’s longstanding challenges.
“The chronic liquidity squeeze in the power sector demands aggressive financial engineering,” Bello said.
He commended the Federal Government for initiating reforms in the sector and pledged the Academy’s support for the Presidential Power Sector Financial Reforms Programme.
“The Academy commends the Federal Government’s bold initiative, and we strongly endorse and provide technical backing for the Presidential Power Sector Financial Reforms Programme,” he stated.
Bello specifically advocated the immediate issuance of specialised bonds to settle outstanding debts owed to gas suppliers, noting that this would help unlock more stable electricity supply across the country.
“We strongly advocate for the immediate issuance of specialised bonds to systematically liquidate gas supply debts and unlock steady power for Nigerians in their homes, businesses and industries,” he said.
The Academy president also urged the government to accelerate implementation of the Presidential Power Initiative, describing it as critical to strengthening the national grid and improving electricity delivery.
“We also urge the implementation of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) without delay, to upgrade the supply capacity of the national grid to 25,000 MW,” Bello said.
He added that efforts to improve power generation should be complemented by a deliberate expansion of renewable energy sources.
“We also urge the implementation of the Presidential Power Initiative without delay, while aggressively pursuing the energy mix agenda via solar, hydro and other green energy schemes,” he stated.
Bello outlined a packed programme of activities for its 2026 Apex Events, which will run through Thursday and focus on innovation, mentorship and engineering excellence.
Bello said Wednesday’s activities will feature the Academy’s Annual General Meeting, where members will review activities over the past year and formally elect new Fellows.
The event will also host the third Annual National Innovation Competition Exhibition, providing a platform for young innovators and engineering entrepreneurs to showcase breakthrough designs and technologies to potential investors and industry stakeholders.
The day will conclude with the Academy’s Technology Dinner and Awards Night, during which outstanding innovators, partners and sponsors will be recognised for their contributions to engineering development in Nigeria.
