Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government has ensured that the country's energy transition moves in tandem with environmental protection, ecosystem sustainability, and safeguards for affected workers.
In a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday, Minister of Environment Jumhur Hidayat said the transformation toward clean energy must be carried out responsibly to drive economic growth without overlooking environmental aspects or worker welfare.
This, he continued, is part of efforts to realize sustainable development in the country.
"We are ensuring that every development step prioritizes strict environmental standards to align with our national climate commitments and guarantee protection for affected workers," Jumhur said.
Speaking at the High-Level Ministerial and CEO Dialogue during the 2026 Global Electrification and Transition Energy Summit (GETES) in London on Tuesday, he underscored Indonesia's strategic position in supporting global climate change mitigation as one of the world's most biodiverse countries.
According to him, Indonesia's tropical forests, peatlands, and mangrove ecosystems play a vital role as natural carbon sinks while serving as a buffer to maintain climate balance.
Therefore, the government continues to make efforts to maintain a balance between energy transition acceleration, economic growth, natural resources protection, and workforce safeguards to ensure sustainable benefits.
He stressed that national energy transition policy integrates economic development with environmental protection. Under this approach, every energy and investment project is obliged to meet strict environmental standards.
"Our priority is to ensure that development policies remain integrated with robust environmental guidelines. This approach serves as Indonesia's foundation for maintaining consistency between economic growth and environmental conservation targets," Jumhur said.
Indonesia's commitment aligns with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' call to accelerate a global energy transition that is just, inclusive, and leaves no country or affected community behind.
Addressing the forum, which was attended by world ministers and energy industry leaders, Guterres emphasized that the energy transition must be capable of creating new jobs, strengthening public welfare, and upholding humanitarian values.
In addition to reaffirming its national commitment, the Indonesian delegation invited partner countries to strengthen transparent and equitable international cooperation to speed up the transition to a cleaner energy system, while supporting the achievement of sustainable development goals.
