
Four newly appointed diplomatic representatives have officially begun their mission in Malta after presenting their credentials to President Myriam Spiteri Debono and paying courtesy visits to Speaker of the House Carmelo Abela. The representatives are Apostolic Nuncio Monsignor Wojciech Załuski of the Holy See, Japanese Ambassador Ono Hikariko, Ghana’s High Commissioner Regina Appiah-Sam and Namibia’s High Commissioner Veiccoh K. Nghiwete. During separate meetings at the Presidential Palace in Valletta, President Spiteri Debono discussed strengthening bilateral ties and expanding cooperation in areas including trade, education, tourism, culture and energy, while also highlighting the importance of collaboration through international organisations such as the Commonwealth and the United Nations. The four diplomats also met Speaker Carmelo Abela in what marked his first courtesy visits from members of Malta’s diplomatic corps since taking office on 20th June. Abela described Parliament as a place for dialogue, mutual respect and parliamentary diplomacy, while discussing ways to deepen Malta’s relations with the Holy See, Japan, Ghana and Namibia through greater political, economic and cultural cooperation. Separately, the Speaker also welcomed China’s Ambassador Zhang, who delivered a congratulatory message from Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress.
