
Maritime experts challenge China's protest over Cebu City WPS resolution
CEBU CITY, Philippines — Maritime law experts have rejected China’s objections to Cebu City’s declaration of July 12 as “West Philippine Sea (WPS) Victory Day,” arguing that Beijing’s legal position contradicts international law and the landmark 2016 arbitral ruling. The Institute for Maritime and Ocean Affairs (IMOA), a Philippine maritime policy think tank, issued an eight-point response after the Chinese Consulate General in Cebu protested a Cebu City Council resolution commemorating the country’s arbitral victory in the West Philippine Sea.
