Nepal Telecom, ITU discusses to become leading digital service provider

On May 27, Managing Director of Nepal Telecom (NTC), Reena Dongol, had a meeting with Kishore Babu Yerraballa, the Regional Representative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for member states of Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region. The meet-up included discussions on the contemporary challenges and future direction of Nepal’s telecommunications sector, shared in its newsletter dated Asar 2083.

During the occasion, the NTC MD Dongol talked about the overall state of Nepal’s telecom landscape and the contributions of NTC in the industry and for the country.

The Regional Representative, Yerraballa, said that ITU would provide necessary facilitation to the company. And he mentioned that NTC could take actions in different areas.

NTC and ITU held discussions on topics ranging from spectrum management, licensing reform, tax-related challenges, etc. Also, they talked about capacity building, adoption of new technologies, innovation in telecom services based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), and institutional restructuring in line with international best practices.

Both parties also talked in-depth about collaboration with ITU experts, strengthening Research and Development (R&D), smart network operations, and the development of commercial models based on sustainability and innovation in the telecommunications sector.

NTC says that the discussion also stressed international cooperation, knowledge exchange, human resource transformation, and enhancing NTC as a digital service provider in the future. One key topic was on how to turn the company into a leading force, aligning with the global telecommunication trends.

Nepal Telecom is Nepal’s leading telecom giant with its 4G service spanning over 98% of local levels and FTTH in all 77 districts. ITU is a specialized UN agency for communications. It is responsible for coordinating the use of the radio spectrum and establishing the technical standards for global communication networks, etc. The meeting, though routine, can be fruitful in devising future plans and ambitions for the telecom company in a financially adverse situation.
