MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila University and telecommunications company Smart Communications were unaware of the training activity in Aurora where student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili drowned, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said.
“Based on all testimonies, the activity was carried out without the knowledge of Ateneo de Manila University,” Remulla said in Filipino in a press briefing on Friday.
“According to multiple testimonies, Ateneo athletics director Em Fernandez and Ateneo president Fr. Bobby Yap knew after the fact,” Remulla added.

“Ang role talaga ng Smart dito ay sponsor lamang. Wala silang alam sa nangyari o sa pagplano ng ganitong klase ng pagkakataon,” Remulla also said.
