The Chargé D’Affaires of the United States of America’s Embassy in Nigeria, Keith Heffern, on Thursday, said the security partnership between Nigeria and his country has saved many lives in the northeast.
He disclosed this in his remarks at a reception to mark the US’s 250th Independence Day at the Embassy premises in Abuja.
“Our security partnership in the fight against terrorism – from the Lake Chad Basin to the North East – has saved lives, protected communities, and demonstrated what is possible when two nations stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of their people.
“That partnership is a source of immense pride, and it will endure,” he said.
The Nigeria-US security partnership is an active counter-terrorism and defence alliance that features a small US advisory and intelligence-sharing contingent collaborating with Nigerian forces in the northeast.
“But our vision extends beyond security. We are entering a new era – one defined not by dependency but by mutual prosperity”, he said, adding the United States is committed to engaging Nigeria not as an aid recipient, but as a capable commercial partner.
“Africa is expected to be home to 2.5 billion people by 2050, a quarter of the world’s population, with a projected purchasing power exceeding $16 trillion. Nigeria stands at the heart of that extraordinary story. We see that potential clearly, and we are here to help unlock it – together.
“Through commercial diplomacy, investment in critical sectors, and transparent efforts, we are building the kind of relationship that delivers lasting value: jobs created, industries grown, and supply chains strengthened.
“We want Nigerian ingenuity and American innovation to write the next chapter of this partnership – one defined by trade, technology, and shared excellence,” Heffern said.
