A tourist has died and two other people were injured after a natural rock arch collapsed onto a passing jet ski off Comino on Saturday evening.
According to the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM), the Rescue Coordination Centre received reports of a rockfall in Comino, with emergency services immediately dispatched to the scene.
An AFM rescue vessel evacuated a woman who required medical attention to Mġarr Harbour, where she was handed over to Gozo General Hospital personnel. A second person, who suffered minor injuries, was transported to Mġarr Harbour by a private vessel for further treatment.
A search operation was then launched to locate a third person. Divers from AFM Gozo Command and the 3rd Regiment later found the individual trapped underwater with no signs of life.
The Civil Protection Department also assisted in the rescue operation by deploying a rescue vessel and personnel to the scene.
The operation to recover the victim remained ongoing on Saturday night, while a magisterial inquiry has been opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Eyewitnesses reported that the rock arch collapsed onto a jet ski that was passing beneath it near Santa Marija Battery at around 7pm. The three people involved are understood to be tourists.
