The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Benue State has arrested a total of 288 drug suspects within the space of one year from different locations in the state.
State Commander of NDLEA, Richard Horsetail Ibiware, who made the disclosure during a press conference in Makurdi to commemorate the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, said the arrest were made between June 2025 and June 2026.
Our correspondent reports that the command also had a walk to sensitise the Benue public on the dangers of drug abuse.
Ibiware said that of the total number of 288 suspects arrested, 255 are males while the remaining 33 are females.
He disclosed that a total of 3,064.563 kilogramme of different kinds of drugs were seized within the period including 2,868.7212 kilogramme of Cannabis sativa alongside 161.161kg of tramadol, 8.127kg Codeine syrup and 0.39923kg Amphetamine amongst other drugs.
The NDLEA commander expressed worry that the usage of substances contributes a great deal to insecurity bedeviling the state, stressing all hands must be on deck to fight the scourge.
He noted that the seized substances including codeine-based syrup allegedly among others are on high use in Benue, adding however that the agency through its robust initiative of war against drug abuse will continue to clampdown on offenders.
Ibiware disclosed that the agency secured 87 convictions, including those of six female suspects, during the period under review. He added that 94 case files were charged to court, 109 clients received counselling at the agency’s facility, while 37 others were successfully rehabilitated and discharged within the same period..
