LUCENA CITY – A four-minute phreatomagmatic eruption occurred at Taal Volcano in Batangas province on Tuesday morning, marking the fourth eruptive event recorded this month, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
According to Phivolcs, the eruption began at 7:13 a.m. and generated a plume that rose about 450 meters above the main crater, based on images from the volcano’s IP surveillance camera.
The latest activity followed similar phreatomagmatic eruptions recorded on June 4 (two minutes), June 5 (four minutes), and June 6 (one minute).

A phreatomagmatic eruption occurs when rising magma comes into explosive contact with water. It differs from a phreatic eruption, which is steam-driven and occurs when groundwater or surface water is rapidly heated by magma, lava, or hot rocks.
Despite the latest eruption, Taal Volcano remains under Alert Level 1, indicating low-level volcanic unrest.
Phivolcs noted that Alert Level 1 still represents an abnormal condition and should not be interpreted as a sign that volcanic unrest has ended or that the possibility of an eruption has disappeared.
The agency warned that sudden steam-driven or minor phreatomagmatic eruptions, minor ashfall, and potentially lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gases may still occur within Taal Volcano Island, which lies at the center of Taal Lake.
In its Tuesday morning bulletin, Phivolcs also reported that Taal Volcano emitted 881 metric tons of sulfur dioxide over the past 24 hours.’

The volcano generated plumes reaching as high as 1,500 meters that drifted southeast, an activity classified by Phivolcs as a moderate emission event.
No upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the main crater lake, volcanic smog (vog), or volcanic earthquakes was observed during the latest monitoring period, Phivolcs added./coa
