Gunmen have attacked a mining site at Nyango in Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing three people and injuring two others.
Daily Trust gathered that the attack occurred around 11.50 am on Tuesday while miners were working at the site. The incident caused panic as miners and nearby residents fled for safety.
A resident, Chuwang Rogo, said the attackers stormed the mining site and opened fire indiscriminately on the workers before fleeing.
Reacting to the incident, the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) condemned the attack, describing it as another sign of the worsening insecurity in Gyel and surrounding communities.
The association’s National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, said the latest incident was not the first violent attack in the area.
He noted that residents of Gyel and neighbouring communities in Bassa Local Government Area had repeatedly raised concerns over attacks allegedly carried out by armed groups operating around the Gyero and Rafin Bauna axis.
BYM called on security agencies and the government to dismantle criminal hideouts and take decisive action to end the recurring violence.
The association accused members of the Fulani community of carrying out the attack.
However, the Plateau State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) denied the allegation, describing it as false.
The spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alabo Alfred, did not respond to calls and a WhatsApp message sent by our correspondent as of press time.
