Maltese MEP Thomas Bajada has reflected on his own experience of cyberbullying more than 15 years ago, warning that while technology has changed dramatically, the damage caused by online abuse remains the same.
Speaking in a recent video shared to social media, Bajada recalled how he was targeted by a website dedicated to harassing him, explaining that it took three years before the case was finally resolved.
“I spoke about cyberbullying that happened more than 15 years ago,” Bajada wrote alongside the video.
“The platforms have changed. The tactics have evolved. But the problem remains the same. Different forms. Same harm. That’s why this conversation is still as important today as it was a decade ago.”
Bajada said the rise of artificial intelligence has made cyberbullying even more difficult to tackle, explaining how AI can now be used to manipulate images and create false content that spreads rapidly online.
Using a hypothetical example, he said someone could take a photo of another person, alter it using AI and post it from a fake social media account, allowing it to circulate within minutes.
He also argued that legislation often struggles to keep pace with the speed at which technology evolves and said greater cooperation from social media platforms is needed to better protect users from online abuse.
