The Strawberry Moon cast a spectacular glow over Lisbon on Monday night, attracting crowds of locals and tourists who gathered along the River Tagus to watch and photograph the celestial event. The striking scenes were featured by Sky News, which shared footage of the full moon rising above the Portuguese capital’s skyline.
Named after the wild strawberry harvest season rather than its colour, this year’s Strawberry Moon appeared unusually low on the horizon in the Northern Hemisphere, creating the illusion of a larger, golden-orange moon. Astronomers say the phenomenon is part of an 18.6-year lunar cycle, making this one of the most distinctive June full moons in decades.
Sky News described how “tourists and locals snapped photos with the beautiful moon as a backdrop” as it rose over the Tagus, with the footage highlighting one of Lisbon’s most memorable summer evenings.
