The Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation has marked the opening of Yorgen Fenech’s trial by jury with a social media post highlighting the years-long wait for proceedings to begin.
“The jury trial of Yorgen Fenech opened today, six years and eight months after he was arrested trying to escape from Malta on his yacht,” the Foundation wrote.
It also noted that Fenech stands accused of multiple charges linked to Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination and pointed out that the first sitting was scheduled to begin this afternoon.
Fenech has pleaded not guilty to charges of complicity in the assassination of the journalist, who was killed in a car bomb outside her Bidnija home in October 2017. Prosecutors allege he masterminded the murder, an accusation he has consistently denied.
The trial by jury began today following years of court proceedings, constitutional challenges and pre-trial hearings. It is expected to span several weeks, with witness testimony set to form a central part of the proceedings.
