Following his big breakout with Obsession, Curry Barker is keeping the indie spirit alive with his follow-up at Focus Features and Blumhouse Atomic Monster.
Anything But Ghosts‘ Cooper Tomlinson, who produced, co-wrote and starred alongside co-writer/director Barker in the supernatural horror, explained why they wanted to “stay grounded” with the film, which wrapped production shortly before Obsession‘s box office takeover.
“I think what’s great about this upcoming movie is, he does some different stuff,” he said of Barker on Raiders of the Lost Podcast. “He’s gonna show a different side of him.”
Tomlinson noted the production was “a very challenging experience, and it was so cool to see [Barker] drop into it. We’re doing a four-page oner, and he’s gotta direct, but he’s also in the scene. I’m excited for people to see that.
“We try not to treat it as something bigger, as something very special, because you could ruin the magic. That’s why we like to stay scrappy, keep running and gunning, and stay grounded about things,” added Tomlinson.
In Anything But Ghosts, two con artists posing as ghost hunters end up in a dangerous situation when they come face-to-face with an actual dark entity. The cast also includes Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard and Violet McGraw.
Barker’s upcoming film with his longtime comedic partner comes after his horror breakout Obsession, which also stars Tomlinson, surpassed $300M globally. He recently set his third film with the Universal/Blumhouse-Atomic Monster family, following Obsession and Anything But Ghosts. Meanwhile, Barker is also rebooting The Texas Chainsaw Massacre at A24.
