
Japan will continue imposing sanctions on Russia and providing support to Ukraine in coordination with the international community as efforts continue toward achieving a lasting peace, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Wednesday.
During a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha, in Tokyo, Motegi reaffirmed Japan’s position that unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force are unacceptable, referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Sybiha expressed gratitude for Japan’s continued assistance.

The meeting marked the first face-to-face talks between the two foreign ministers since last November in Canada.
Japan has been one of Ukraine’s leading supporters in Asia since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
While constrained by its pacifist principles from providing lethal weapons, Tokyo has expanded humanitarian, financial and reconstruction assistance and joined Western sanctions against Moscow.

Before meeting Motegi, Sybiha held separate talks with the speakers of both houses of Japan’s parliament. /dl
