Security operatives have killed one suspected attacker after gunmen attempted to invade the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State, on Wednesday night.
It was gathered that the other assailants fled into a nearby bush after troops engaged them in a gun battle. Security operatives also recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition from the attackers.
The latest incident came barely two weeks after armed men attacked the institute and killed three security personnel.
The spokesman of the Joint Task Force, Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Polycarp Oteh, said the incident occurred at about 11:00 pm on Wednesday when suspected armed criminals attempted to gain access to the institute.
Narrating the incident, the spokesperson said: “On Wednesday, 1 July 2026, at about 11:00pm, troops deployed at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos South LGA of Plateau State, while on sentry duties, were fired at by suspected terrorists who had breached the perimeter through a low fence and under cover of darkness.
“Troops swiftly engaged the terrorists and neutralised one of them while others fled. The body of the neutralised terrorist has been handed over to the police for further necessary action. Arms and ammunition recovered are currently in custody while troops are dominating the area with aggressive patrols.”
The Head of Public Affairs at NIPSS, Dr Osime Samuel, also confirmed the incident.
In a statement, Samuel said there was no breach of the institute’s security perimeter.
“Security agencies have intensified efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects, while surveillance and other proactive security measures have been strengthened within and around the institute,” he said.
Military sources confirmed on Thursday that the recovered AK-47 rifle was stolen from a Nigerian Army soldier, who was killed during an attack by suspected militia around the Federal College of Land Resources Technology, Vom, in Jos South Local Government Area on April 11, 2026.
“The recovered weapon belongs to the Nigerian Army. It was taken during the attack in which one of our soldiers was killed in Vom,” one of the sources said.
Third attack in 2 weeks
The latest attack occurred after gunmen stormed the institute on June 16, 2026, killing two soldiers and a police officer.
Following the attack, the Plateau State Police Command and Operation Enduring Peace announced the deployment of additional security personnel and intensified patrols around the institute.
However, despite the reinforcement, gunmen continued to target the institute.
On June 29, 2026, troops and other security agencies foiled another attempted infiltration after gunmen tried to enter the institute through the second gate but were repelled by security personnel.
Again, on Wednesday night, July 1, the gunmen attempted to invade the institute through the same route but were repelled by troops, who killed one of the attackers while the others escaped into the surrounding bush.
Attackers not our members – Berom community
The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), under the leadership of Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri rejected claims that the attackers were members of the Berom ethnic group.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, the group said: “The Berom nation does not have any militia group. If indeed the Berom people had a militia as falsely alleged, armed terrorists would not have continued to invade our communities, kill our people, destroy our farms and displace indigenous populations across several communities in Plateau State with alarming frequency.”
