Ten years after Eleanor Walker was murdered, her mother has renewed her plea for justice as the case against the man charged with her killing remains unresolved.
“It’s 10 years today since Eleanor was murdered and nothing has happened for her justice. I am begging for justice,” Josephine Walker said on the anniversary of her daughter’s death.
Walker was killed on 2nd July 2016. Her body was later discovered in a warehouse in Qormi, with police saying she died from a head injury caused by a blunt object.
Her estranged husband, Andrew Mangion, turned himself in following a two-day manhunt and was subsequently charged with her murder. He has pleaded not guilty.
Although he was initially remanded in custody, Mangion was granted bail just over a year later. According to the Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation, he has since faced further criminal charges allegedly committed while on bail, including violent theft, and remains at liberty while awaiting trial.
Marking the anniversary, a banner reading “10 years on and still no justice for Eleanor Walker” was displayed opposite Parliament in Valletta.
The Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation said the case highlights the human cost of delayed justice, noting that no trial date has yet been set despite a decade having passed since Walker’s murder.
The Foundation also pointed to its Justice at Risk report, warning that lengthy criminal proceedings can lead to evidence deteriorating, witnesses’ memories fading and accused persons becoming unavailable to stand trial.
