As the trial of Yorgen Fenech enters its third day, Daphne Caruana Galizia’s sister, Mandy Mallia, shared an emotional post reflecting on her family’s long wait for justice.
Mallia said the court was once again hearing recordings in which Fenech allegedly told the middleman that Daphne “must not end up like Romeo Bone”, referring to the businessman who survived a car bomb attack years earlier despite suffering life-changing injuries.
She said the recordings allegedly suggested the bomb used against Daphne had to be powerful enough to kill her rather than leave her injured.
She also noted that the military-grade bomb used in the assassination was reinforced with a bottle of petrol.
Alongside her message, Mallia shared a photograph she took of Daphne laughing with their father during a family gathering in June 2003, saying it was a reminder that her sister was “a living, breathing human being” before she was murdered on 16th October 2017.
Mallia added that their mother died without seeing justice served, while their father, now in his late eighties, continues to closely follow every development in the case after spending years attending court proceedings.
“Justice for Daphne can’t come soon enough. Malta must step up,” she wrote.
The first witness in the trial is expected to take the stand on Friday as Fenech faces charges in connection with the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was killed in a car bomb attack in October 2017.
