Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) - Culture Minister Fadli Zon has proposed upgrading the Indonesian Postal Museum in Bandung to national cultural heritage status, citing its more than century-old history and importance to Indonesia's cultural legacy.
“The Postal Museum deserves national cultural heritage status. This building is more than 100 years old and is an important part of the nation’s history,” he said in a statement on Saturday.
Fadli said the Dutch colonial-era building merits the designation because of its age and historical significance to Indonesia.
He also called for improvements to the museum so its thousands of collections, including postal equipment, stamps and historical documents, can be presented more attractively to younger visitors.
During a visit, Fadli urged state postal operator PT Pos Indonesia to revive handwritten letter writing among students to foster creativity and personal connections that digital technology cannot fully replace.
He cited the Culture Ministry’s letter-writing competition to national heroes last year, which received 34,000 stamped letters from students nationwide within one month.
The response showed that letter writing and philately remain valued by the public and continue to be recognized as part of global cultural heritage through international exhibitions, he said.
PT Pos Indonesia Commercial Director Fahdel Akbar reaffirmed the company’s commitment to preserving the museum and its historical collections.
“Pos Indonesia welcomes the Culture Ministry’s support to preserve the Indonesian Postal Museum. We are committed to developing it as an engaging educational destination, especially for younger generations,” he said.
