Visitors looking for an authentic taste of Algarve culture will have plenty to enjoy when the Feira Popular de Loulé (Loulé Popular Fair) returns from Thursday to Sunday (July 9-12), bringing together traditional food, artisan crafts, folklore, live music and family entertainment in the heart of the town.
Held in Largo do Monumento Eng.º Duarte Pacheco, the fair recreates the charitable fairs that enlivened the former Quinta do Pombal during the 1940s and 1950s. Now held under the theme Saberes e Sabores, Artes e Tradições (Knowledge and Flavours, Arts and Traditions), it has become one of Loulé’s best-loved summer events.
Throughout the four-day festival, dozens of local artisans and food producers will showcase traditional Algarve craftsmanship and regional products. Visitors can browse handmade items crafted from palm leaves, wood and copper, while sampling local honey, liqueurs and traditional sweets. Live craft demonstrations will also give visitors the chance to see artisans at work.
The fair’s food stalls will serve a variety of regional favourites, including carapaus alimados (marinated horse mackerel), xerém (a traditional cornmeal dish), carne de alguidar (seasoned pork) and octopus salad.
The entertainment programme combines contemporary music with traditional Portuguese culture. Veteran singer-songwriter José Cid opens the festival with a concert at 10pm on July 9, while acclaimed fado singer Gisela João closes the event on July 12, bringing her distinctive interpretation of Portugal’s national music to the stage.
Traditional culture takes centre stage on Friday, July 11, when the 46th Folklore Festival welcomes folk groups from across Portugal alongside the Rancho Folclórico de Loulé, offering visitors a chance to experience regional dances, music and costumes from different parts of the country.
The evening before, on Thursday, July 10, visitors can take part in a folklore workshop at 8pm, followed by a traditional dance with Emanuel & Tânia at 9pm.
The festival also includes a programme of hands-on workshops organised by Loulé Criativo, covering botanical fabric printing, cyanotype photography using Algarve flora, jewellery-making and weaving.
Entry is free. The fair will be open from 7pm to midnight on Thursday and Sunday, and from 7pm until 1am on Friday and Saturday.
