Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister
Antonio Tajani said Monday that US President Donald Trump's
latest attack on Premier Giorgia Meloni will not have an impact
on relations between the two countries.
In the fresh attack Trump posted a photo of the premier looking
at him on his Truth social media platform with "Restraining
Order Needed" written above.
"These statements speak for themselves," Tajani told Sky Tg24.
"From the very beginning (of the spat between Trump and Meloni)
we said that we would not respond to statements of this kind, so
let's move on.
"We are convinced that transatlantic relations go far beyond
individual statements.
"We are friends with the United States, which is a strategic
partner and, along with Europe, the most important part of the
West—and that is what matters to us. Relations with the United
States are fundamental from every perspective—commercial,
political, and strategic.
"We have been allies of the United States under Obama, Clinton,
Bush, Reagan, and Biden, so there is no issue for us; we're
moving forward, continuing to build on these very important
political relations, regardless of a few statements."
Tajani and Defence Minister Guido Crosetto were among the
Italian officials to attend an event at the US ambassador's
residence in Rome last week to celebrate Independence Day
despite Trump's recent attacks on the premier.
