An FCT Magistrates’ Court sitting in Life Camp, Abuja, has convicted and sentenced a 28-year-old man, Samuel Joshua, to three months’ imprisonment for stealing a woman’s mobile phone.
The trial magistrate, A. U. Best, gave the sentence with an option of a N50,000 fine and also ordered the convict to pay N150,000 as compensation to the complainant. The court further warned that Joshua would be held responsible should any harm come to the victim.
Joshua, a resident of Karimo, Abuja, was arraigned by the Nigeria Police Force on a one-count charge of theft, contrary to Section 287 of the Penal Code.
Police prosecutor Babatunde Bankole told the court that the matter followed a complaint lodged at the Life Camp Police Division by the victim shortly after the incident.
According to him, the complainant was returning from work when Joshua allegedly accosted her, dragged her handbag and fled with her Infinix mobile phone.
Police investigations led to the arrest of the defendant, who was subsequently charged to court after investigators established a prima facie case against him.
When the charge was read to him, Joshua pleaded guilty and admitted stealing the phone, telling the court that he later sold it for N25,000.
Following the guilty plea, the prosecutor urged the court to convict the defendant under the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, arguing that the plea was sufficient to establish the offence.
In his plea for leniency, Joshua expressed remorse and appealed to the court for mercy, promising not to commit such an offence again.
