In the words of Donkey, “Oh my God! It’s happening. It’s really happening!”
It has been nearly 17 years since we last saw Shrek on the big screen. Now, after almost two decades, the beloved ogre is finally set to return for another adventure alongside familiar faces. However, not everyone is thrilled about Shrek’s comeback.
In a newly released teaser trailer, fans were given a glimpse of the “whirlwind big-city adventure” Shrek and Donkey are about to embark on. Joining the duo are Fiona and her and Shrek’s children, who all end up in jail. And perhaps the biggest surprise of all? The return of Gingy, who is apparently “caked up like a friggin’ bakery.”
Many fans of Shrek have expressed excitement about seeing the beloved characters back on the silver screen.
However, some were not thrilled with the film’s animation style, expressing disappointment with the animators behind the upcoming movie.
This is not the first time ‘Shrek 5’ has faced criticism over its new look. When the first teaser dropped in February 2025, fans were not pleased with Shrek’s “over-polished” appearance. Some called on Universal to heed their pleas and redo the animation, much like Paramount did with the Sonic the Hedgehog film.
Whether the filmmakers will listen to these criticisms remains to be seen.
‘Shrek 5’ is set to hit theaters on June 30, 2027, with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz reprising their roles. Also joining the cast are Zendaya, Skyler Gisondo, and Marcello Hernandez, who will play Shrek and Fiona’s children.
