
MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon — Several public schools here suspended in-person classes on Thursday, July 9, after flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rains affected several villages across the city.The Department of Education (DepEd) Malaybalay City Division announced that Sawaga Elementary School, Langasihan Elementary School, Managok Central School, Maligaya Integrated School, and Matangpatang Elementary School shifted to modular distance learning, as flooding and landslides made travel unsafe for students, teachers, and school personnel.Heavy rains brought by Typhoon “Inday” (international name: Bavi) and enhanced by the southwest monsoon (Habagat) inundated several communities on Wednesday.

Aria Cagaanan, operations and warning officer of the Malaybalay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), said the rainfall intensified at around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, triggering flash floods in several barangays and prompting emergency responders to evacuate affected families to designated evacuation centers.
CDRRMO data showed that 205 families were evacuated, including 10 families from Barangay Managok who were temporarily housed at the Violeta Evacuation Center.Authorities also confirmed the death of a 50-year-old man in Barangay Managok after he was swept away by strong floodwaters while attempting to cross a flooded section.Flooding was likewise reported in barangays Miglamin, Linabo, Violeta, and Simaya.A landslide temporarily blocked a road in Barangay Miglamin, but responders cleared the route later that evening, Cagaanan said.DepEd-Malaybalay urged parents and students to monitor official advisories from the Schools Division Office, the Malaybalay City government, and local disaster management authorities for updates on class suspensions and weather conditions./coa
