Salvini fears political motives behind latest rail chaos
New management team for rail company FS on Monday says transport minister

Deputy Premier and Transport and
Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini suggested political
motives could be behind the suspension of train services in
Calabria early on Thursday, the latest in a long series of major
disruptions to have hit Italy's rail network.
Services had to be halted because cables were cut at several
points on rail lines in the southern region in apparent acts of
sabotage.
"This morning I woke up to a call from the CEO of (railway
infrastructure operator) RFI alerting me about cut cables on the
railway line in Calabria, which brought traffic to a
standstill," League leader Salvini told a press conference.
"To date a quarter of the (rail service) disruptions have been
caused by damage or malicious acts at a time when we have more
(rail network) construction sites open than ever before in
history.
"Then we have terrorism, copper thieves, and people who cut
cables.
"I hope that there are no political motives behind these acts,
because it is the passengers who end up paying the price".
Anarchist groups claimed responsibility for several of the acts
of sabotage that hit the rail network earlier this year in the
period of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and
Paralympics.
This week, on the other hand, high-speed services have been
affected by planned infrastructure work in the Florence area.
Salvini also announced Thursday that rail company Ferrovie dello
Stato (FS) is set to have a new management team on Monday after
CEO Stefano Donnarumma announced last month he was stepping
down.
The centre-left opposition said it should be Salvini and not
Donnarumma quitting after years of allegedly bad service.
