Jakarta (ANTARA) - A high-level Indonesian delegation led by Foreign Minister Sugiono and Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Ahmad Muzani departed for Iran to pay their final respects to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
"The visit is to fulfill an invitation from the Iranian government to honor Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the late Supreme Leader of Iran," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said in Jakarta on Thursday.
The delegation is scheduled to attend the state funeral on Friday (July 10, local time) before holding separate bilateral meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
According to Yvonne, the meeting between Sugiono and Araghchi will focus on strengthening cooperation in priority sectors while discussing regional and global developments.
Meanwhile, talks between Muzani and Ghalibaf are expected to reinforce inter-parliamentary cooperation and expand people-to-people relations between Indonesia and Iran.
Representatives from Indonesia's two largest Islamic organizations, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, are also accompanying the delegation, underscoring the cultural and religious dimensions of the bilateral relationship.
"This visit demonstrates the close relationship between the two countries and affirms the consistency of Indonesia's independent and active foreign policy," Yvonne said.
The Foreign Ministry said it is coordinating closely with Iranian authorities and the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran to ensure the delegation's safe and timely arrival amid heightened security surrounding the state funeral.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who governed as Iran's ultimate spiritual and political authority for nearly 37 years, died following a targeted US-Israeli military strike on Tehran on February 28, 2026.
The late Supreme Leader's remains lay in state at Tehran's Grand Mosque over the weekend of July 4–5, before proceeding through extensive processions across Qom and several Iraqi cities, including Baghdad, Karbala and Najaf—ahead of the final burial in Mashhad on Friday.
