Lagoa has resurfaced around 25 kilometres of roads across the municipality over the past 18 months as part of one of its largest road improvement programmes in recent years.
The work has been carried out across the municipality’s four parishes, with the council adopting a strategy of replacing ageing water mains and household connections before resurfacing roads.
The approach is designed to prevent newly paved streets from having to be dug up again for underground repairs, while also reducing water losses and improving the efficiency of the public water supply network.
Once the underground infrastructure was upgraded, the municipality resurfaced a number of key roads and residential streets, including the road linking the Lagoa Industrial Zone and Sesmarias, the route between Slide & Splash and Mexilhoeira da Carregação, the road connecting Poço Partido and Vale Centeanes, several streets in the city of Lagoa, the centre of Ferragudo, and the coastal road between Praia dos Caneiros and Praia da Angrinha.
Work is continuing, with a new phase of resurfacing now underway in Porches, where further water supply upgrades will also be carried out before new asphalt is laid.
Meanwhile, the council plans to relaunch a separate resurfacing contract covering the Carvoeiro area after the previous tender attracted no bids from contractors.
Mayor Luís Encarnação said the programme is about more than simply laying new asphalt.
“As I have always said, we must first replace the water supply pipes, ensuring that public investment is responsible, efficient and prepared to meet the municipality’s future needs,” he said.
Encarnação added that resurfacing 25 kilometres of roads is a significant achievement for a council covering an area of just 88 square kilometres.
He also said that the council intends to continue the programme over the coming years so residents can benefit from better roads and improved public spaces.
