Banyuwangi Main Market has been transformed into a tourism-oriented marketplace through a revitalization program, a development reviewed by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka during his working visit to Banyuwangi District, East Java, on Friday.
Accompanied by East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa and Banyuwangi District Head Ipuk Fiestiandani, Gibran toured the market, which features architecture inspired by the Osing culture.
The vice president inspected several sections of the market, including its main entrance, kiosks, and stalls. The facility was built by the Ministry of Public Works at a cost of approximately Rp152 billion (around US$9.3 million).
Banyuwangi District Head Ipuk Fiestiandani said the market was designed as a tourism destination, with traders grouped according to the types of goods they sell to make it easier for visitors to navigate.
"As it adopts a tourism market concept, we also expect the market to become a venue for various events in the future," she said.
During the visit, Gibran also met with representatives of market traders and congratulated them, saying the market has been developed into a modern and well-designed facility.
The market incorporates local architectural elements, with ornaments representing the Osing people, the indigenous ethnic community of Banyuwangi, prominently displayed throughout the complex.
The facility was designed as a green building, featuring a semi-open layout that allows natural airflow to circulate throughout the market.
Built on a 10,600-square-meter site, Banyuwangi Main Market consists of two main buildings located on the northern and southern sides of the complex. It accommodates 397 kiosks and 356 stalls.
The market is divided into three main sections: a wet market, a dry market, and a culinary zone.
