The pale style of Negra Mole wines comes from the mix of white, pink and black grapes that grow within each ripe cluster on the vine.
Negra Mole is native to the Algarve and once dominated the region. Negra Mole fell out of fashion for decades, vines abandoned or replaced by internationally recognized varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
In the last decade, however, Negra Mole has made a strong comeback. Old vines have been restored and Algarve producers are planting new vines, making Negra Mole once again a symbol of the region’s winemaking traditions. Local producers like Arvad are investing heavily in Negra Mole, aiming to produce wines that satisfy the growing global demand for lighter-style reds.
Arvad’s Negra Mole Tinto is consistently a favorite among my clients. The wine was aged for eight months in clay amphoras, giving it an earthy quality with notes of dried herbs, while still maintaining juicy raspberry and red cherry flavors. Smooth, with light tannins, it is refreshing and versatile with foods. Grilled seafood, vegetarian dishes, churrasco chicken or light petiscos are all good choices for summer dining with this wine. Best when served chilled to around 12°C.
Find Arvad Negra Mole Tinto at Apolónia for €18.95, or other local supermarkets.
