Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism is supporting the planned restoration and conservation efforts for the Prambanan Temple Compounds to be carried out under the collaboration of the Indonesian and Indian governments.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (July 8) inaugurated a partnership for the conservation and restoration of Prambanan Temple, a Hindu temple complex in Yogyakarta.
"Restoration and conservation efforts will not only preserve Prambanan Temple as a historic site but also elevate its appeal as a tourist attraction," Ministry of Tourism spokesperson Nia Niscaya told ANTARA in Jakarta on Friday.
She noted that the Ministry of Tourism plays a role in supporting the development of Prambanan Temple and its surrounding areas as a tourist destination.
The ministry, she explained, will design curated travel packages—such as wellness, historical, and cultural tours—allowing tourists to experience the authentic heritage of Yogyakarta and Central Java while enjoying the beauty of Prambanan Temple.
PM Modi stated that the restoration is targeted for completion before 2029 and promised that he will return to Indonesia once the temple's restoration project is finished.
The prime minister expressed confidence that the number of Indian tourists and pilgrims visiting Prambanan Temple will surge following the completion of the restoration work.
According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), foreign tourist arrivals from India to Indonesia reached 606,439 in 2023, grew to 710,207 in 2024, and hit 734,490 in 2025.
BPS data also showed that from January to May 2026, Indian tourist arrivals reached 298,450.
The Ministry of Tourism is targeting between 750,000 and 820,000 arrivals from India for the full year of 2026.
