ICMBio inaugurated the Comprida trail on Sunday (28) on Comprida Island, one of the four islands of Mona Cagarras (Cagarras Islands Natural Monument), in Rio de Janeiro. It is the first island trail within a Conservation Unit in the state and the first oceanic section of the Transcarioca, a 180-kilometer long-distance trail connecting Barra de Guaratiba, in the west zone, to Urca hill, in the south zone.
The trail offers three routes: the out-and-back, at 400 meters, along the island's south face; the short route, at 800 meters, covering the south and north faces; and the long route, at 1,200 meters, a circular path passing through the south, north, and east faces. The Cagarras can be seen from beaches such as Ipanema and Leblon.
The Conservation Unit was created in 2010, and the trail study began in 2012, but the management plan was only approved in 2020. Access is permitted Monday through Sunday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with no camping allowed. It is recommended that only visitors over 12 years old and without mobility issues take the trip, as the landing is "wet": one must swim about 30 meters to the island and climb a rocky shore, with no beaches or pier. The difficulty is classified as moderate to high, and ICMBio recommends hiring accredited transportation and guides.
