Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is committed to supporting the development of sports facilities to strengthen sports tourism in the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Taufik Hidayat said.
"The government supports the development of sports facilities not only to improve athletic performance but also to develop the sports industry, which contributes to the local economy," Hidayat said while inaugurating a new padel facility at The Mandalika on Saturday.
He said Mandalika has gained international recognition as a tourism destination, and the addition of the padel facility is expected to further strengthen sports tourism in the area.
Hidayat expressed hope that the new facility would eventually help produce high-performing athletes, although he acknowledged that such a process would take time.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining the facility properly so that it can continue supporting tourism development and local economic growth.
"We hope visitors come not only to watch the MotoGP race but also to enjoy the sports facilities available in Mandalika," he said.
Meanwhile, Acting President Director of the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) Ahmad Fajar said the new facilities are expected to reinforce Mandalika's position as a tourism destination that also promotes sports tourism and a healthy lifestyle.
"We continue to expand sports facilities to further strengthen Mandalika's global profile, complemented by the presence of MotoGP," he said.
He noted that the newly developed facilities include three padel courts and one basketball court.
In addition to its sports facilities, Mandalika also offers visitors the opportunity to experience Lombok's culture, arts, and culinary attractions, he added.
