CEBU CITY, Philippines — The son of a missing 48-year-old caregiver has been asked to undergo DNA testing as authorities work to determine whether a human skull found in Talisay City over the weekend belongs to his mother.
According to a report from the Talisay City Police Station, the woman’s son, 25-year-old Kyde Basilio Tupas of Zamboanga City, appeared at the police station on Saturday evening, July 11, with his sister-in-law to report the disappearance of his mother, Pilar Basilio, also known as Katha Saavedra.
Police said Tupas would undergo a buccal swab collection for DNA testing. His DNA profile will be compared with the recovered human remains to help determine whether they belong to his missing mother.

Missing caregiver
According to the report, Basilio, 48, worked as a stay-in caregiver for a resident of Barangay San Isidro in Talisay City.
Her son told police that the last message he received from her was on July 4, which he found unusual because they regularly kept in touch.

He said that on July 8, he and his sister-in-law went to the residence of his mother’s employer’s sister-in-law in Zamboanga City to inquire about her whereabouts.
They were told that Basilio had been missing from her employer’s residence for two days after allegedly leaving without permission and that the incident had already been reported to the police.
Human skull discovered
On the afternoon of July 11, Tupas said he was informed by one of his mother’s neighbors that an unidentified human skull had been found along Dawis Road in Barangay Cansojong, Talisay City.
The information prompted him to travel to Cebu to determine whether the recovered remains could be those of his missing mother.
Earlier that day, at around 11:50 a.m., a concerned citizen reported the discovery of a human skull in a grassy area along Dawis Road.
Police said the remains were initially found by an e-bike driver scavenging in the area, who immediately alerted authorities.
Responding police officers and Emergency Medical Service personnel secured the scene and launched an investigation to determine the identity of the victim.
As of Monday, July 13, authorities have yet to confirm whether the recovered human skull belongs to Basilio.
