The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has welcomed the rescue of pupils, teachers and other victims abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, describing their release after 56 days in captivity as a moment of thanksgiving.
In a statement, CAN expressed gratitude to God for preserving the lives of the victims and congratulated their families on the successful reunion.
The association said the rescue marked a significant relief for parents whose anguish had finally given way to joy, noting that no child or teacher should have to endure such an ordeal.
CAN also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, the Armed Forces, intelligence agencies, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Amotekun Corps, local hunters, vigilantes and all those involved in securing the victims’ freedom.
According to the association, reports that the operation was driven by patience, credible intelligence and a determination to protect innocent lives demonstrate that effective collaboration among security agencies can produce positive results.
It also praised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for standing by the affected families throughout the period of captivity and for pledging government support for the rehabilitation of the rescued pupils and teachers.
While celebrating the development, CAN said the successful rescue should not overshadow the plight of thousands of Nigerians still being held by terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups across the country.
The association noted that while families in Oriire could now embrace their loved ones, many parents in states such as Borno, Niger and other parts of the country continue to live in uncertainty, hoping for the safe return of their children.
“Their pain is no less real because it attracts fewer headlines. Their tears are no less bitter because the cameras have moved elsewhere,” the statement said.
CAN stressed that every Nigerian life deserves equal value and protection, regardless of religion, ethnicity or geographical location, urging authorities to intensify efforts to secure the release of all remaining captives.
The association further called on governments, faith-based organisations and humanitarian agencies to provide counselling, medical care and psychosocial support for the rescued children, teachers and their families to aid their recovery from the trauma of captivity.
It also stressed the need to restore confidence in the nation’s educational system by ensuring schools remain safe environments for learning.
“No parent should have to choose between giving a child an education and keeping that child alive,” the statement added.
CAN urged Nigerians to continue praying for those still in captivity, support security personnel carrying out lawful operations, and stand in solidarity with families awaiting the return of their loved ones.
The association said it would continue to pray for the full recovery of the rescued victims, the protection of security personnel, and the successful rescue of all Nigerians still in captivity, adding that true celebration would only come when citizens can live and move freely without fear.
