Sugbu Bowling: Fines, Sarabia, Enoveso top in new contest format

CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Sugbuanon Bowlers United (Sugbu) crowned a new set of champions after introducing a revamped format for its weekly bowling shootout tournament last Sunday at the SM Seaside Bowling and Leisure Center.

Under the organization’s new leadership headed by president Mark Hodgkinson, Sugbu has shifted to recognizing champions in each division instead of naming a single overall winner from its regular shootout tournament featuring bowlers from all three divisions.

Fines with 772 pinfalls

Leading the way in the premier Division A was Mel Fines, who topped the four-game series with 772 pinfalls. Fines narrowly edged Rene Ceniza, who finished second with 766 pinfalls, while Rommel Calipay secured third place with 750.

Division B belonged to Meggy Sarabia, who rolled 779 pinfalls to capture the title. Marvin Villar placed second with 755 pinfalls, while Manny Bueno completed the podium with 743.

In Division C, veteran bowler Dory Enoveso emerged as champion after tallying 628 pinfalls. Fellow senior bowler Romy Mauro finished runner-up with 611 pinfalls, while Cathy Sarabia placed third with 599.

The division-based format will now be used in Sugbu’s regular shootout tournaments. However, the organization’s monthly “Bowler of the Month” competition will continue to follow its existing format.

Previously in the bowling community, senior bowler Tessie Dante snapped a lengthy title drought after capturing the Sugbuanon Bowlers United (Sugbu) “Bowler of the Month” championship on Sunday, July 5, at the SM Seaside Bowling and Leisure Center.

It was Dante’s first Sugbu title since winning the organization’s bowling shootout tournament in October last year.

Less than a year later, Dante rediscovered her winning touch by edging former champion and elite bowler Jomar Jumapao in a closely contested championship match, scoring 210 pinfalls.
