Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has urged the United States and Iran to continue to abide by the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on peace signed in Islamabad last month and to immediately cease hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz.
"The MoU was signed yesterday and we hope both parties will continue to respect it," Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said after attending the 6th Indonesia-Vietnam Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He emphasised that restoring stability to the Gulf region is a matter of direct national interest, warning that a prolonged conflict would have immediate economic consequences for the Indonesian public.
Sugiono further stressed that Indonesia's stance in addressing the dynamics of the US-Iran conflict will remain unchanged in its fight for peace and stability in the region.
"Our position remains unchanged. We want the situation there to stabilize again, peace to be achieved and attacks to stop immediately," Sugiono noted.

Despite the peace agreement of Islamabad MoU signed on June 17, the US and Iran resumed their attacks on July 7 following a dispute over merchant shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US has launched a series of strikes against Iranian targets, while Tehran has retaliated by attacking US assets in several locations in the Gulf region.
The latest strikes were carried out by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Monday (July 13) under the pretext of weakening Iran's ability to continue attacking international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
On the same day, US President Donald Trump announced his administration was reimposing the "Iran blockade" and proposed imposing a 20 percent fee on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz, in exchange for US protection of the strategic waterway.
"We are reimposing the Iran blockade, so-called because it only stops Iranian ships or customers from entering or leaving. All other nations will have fair and open use of the Strait," Trump said via his Truth Social platform.
