Daphne Caruana Galizia replied to a text message sent by the man who would later help assassinate her, the court heard today.
Testifying during Yorgen Fenech’s trial by jury, convicted hitman Vince Muscat, known as Il-Koħħu, confirmed previous testimony that fellow hitman George Degiorgio had been texting the journalist in 2015, two years before she was killed.
According to testimony read out in court, Degiorgio obtained Caruana Galizia’s phone number and sent her messages containing information about various people.
Muscat said she eventually replied with a message saying: “If you want to speak, let’s meet,” explaining that she did not rely on phone calls.
He also told the court that they had been trying to track Caruana Galizia’s movements because they had not seen her for some time.
Muscat and Degiorgio have both been convicted for their roles in the 2017 assassination of Caruana Galizia, who was killed in a car bomb outside her Bidnija home.
Prosecutors allege businessman Yorgen Fenech masterminded and financed that plot. Fenech has pleaded not guilty.
Muscat also repeated claims that an earlier alleged plot in 2015 to kill Caruana Galizia ultimately fell through after no money changed hands. Those allegations remain disputed, with former minister Chris Cardona and lawyer David Gatt denying any involvement.
