The campaign arm for House Republicans announced on Tuesday that it has added seven new candidates to its program aimed at flipping seats this fall.
The new additions build out a slate of 24 “MAGA Majority” candidates hoping to win in highly competitive House districts across the country, an National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) effort rebranded from what was long called the “Young Guns” program.
Among the new candidates are Jeanine Driscoll, who’s running against first-term Democrat Rep. Laurea Gillen in New York’s 4th Congressional District; Derek Merrin, who’s facing a rematch with Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D) in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District; and Barb Regnitz, who’s challenging Rep. Frank Mrvan (D) in Indiana’s 1st Congressional District.
Carlos De La Cruz, the brother of Texas Rep. Monica De La Cruz, is also on the list as he faces off against Democrat Johnny Garcia for a Lone Star State seat reshaped by GOP-friendly redistricting.
The group is also backing three candidates who still have to get through upcoming primaries: Mike Bouchard Jr., who is running to succeed Rep. John James (R) in Michigan’s open 10th Congressional District; Amir Hassan, who’s challenging Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet (D) in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District; and Anthony DiLorenzo, who’s vying to oust Rep. Chris Pappas (D) in New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District.
The candidates in the NRCC’s program get early support and resources in their midterm fights. All seven new additions are backed by President Trump.
“While House Democrats are consumed by infighting and lurching further to the far left, Republicans continue to build the strongest candidate roster in the country,” NRCC Chair Richard Hudson of North Carolina said in a statement. “These America First leaders are exactly the kind of battle-tested conservatives who will help us grow our majority and continue advancing President Donald Trump’s agenda.”
With just over 100 days out from the November general election, the stakes are high for both parties in a close fight for control on Capitol Hill.
Decision Desk HQ currently forecasts that, while Republicans are favored to narrowly retain power in the Senate, Democrats are favored to win a 17-seat advantage in the House.
Republicans also have just a 35 percent chance of retaining full control of both chambers, according to the predictions.
Though those numbers could change as the election nears, they underscore that Republicans are on defense to hold on to their narrow House majority – especially as they face the historic trend of a sitting president’s party losing ground in the midterms.
